And so I lie upon my bed

Having adventures inside my head

Making up stories where I’m the star

Who loves and is loved both near and far

Who carries on in the face of death

Who keeps on fighting til my last breath

Who wins the day and slays the beast

Is guest of honour at the victory feast

Who’s smart, and beautiful, clever, and quick

Who sees every pathway, knows every trick

With a shout from my parents I’m dragged right back

To an absent dad and a mum off track

Drugged up and off in her own dark place

Insisting we share her miserable space

A life where I’m nothing, and no one, and worse

Children sharing a life-long curse

Why can’t I return to that empty bed

And get lost in the dreams inside my head
