I can’t see the stars anymore
When we were young, we could see them
Not as well as in the country, certainly
But still, there they were
Competing with the moon for beauty
Shining through space and time
But the city has grown
And the fake lights shine more brightly
Blotting out those small beacons
Until the moon rides in solitary splendour
Across a blank night sky
You’d have to drive and drive
Out to where the city lights are dim and distant
In search of a memory of childhood light
And then the stars will return
Brilliant and bright
Reigning supreme in the clear dark night
