In a year of contagion, isolation
Of sickness and fear
Waiting for things to go back to how they were
Will they? Should they?
Shops and radios alike blare Rudolph and Frosty
Everyone pretending that everything’s fine
Maybe if we can’t afford
That Christmas of the usual, luxury and fun
Maybe if we can’t see our loved ones
Because it’s too dangerous
Or they’re the other side
Of a border we’re not allowed to cross
Maybe we can think about
A different way of being
A different way of doing
Maybe we can reach out a hand
To those who have lost so much this year
Maybe we can play Santa
To someone who has no hope
Maybe we can be the Christ child
Bringing light to the world
Maybe we can start again
And build a different Christmas, a better Christmas.
