Walking a road that I do not know
to a destination unknown
I don’t know where I started from
nor why I travel alone
I walk when the sun is high above
I walk in the moonless night
I walk til I ache from head to toe
and still no end in sight.
Sometimes the road is pleasant
water, and trees, and life
Sometimes the road is barren
with dust and dirt and strife
Sometimes others greet me
and walk with me for a day
Sometimes others shun me
and chase me on my way
I don’t know where I’m heading
but I know I must keep on
it might be home at the end of the road
the place where I belong
I think my father is at the gate
watching for me to arrive
I think he will love me and be glad
that the prodigal is alive
