If only I could hold it
That intangible something
Always just beyond reach
Like voices in another room
With the door slightly ajar
They speak, but I can’t hear what they say
One day I might push open that door
And rush in to kneel before the speakers
I will humbly say
‘teach me what you know
I seek the truth’
Only to find there is no truth
Their murmured temptations nothing but nonsense
Tantalus finally bites the fruit
And finds it tasteless
