Be fruitful, says the Lord

We think immediately of branches reaching high, laden with goodness.

We think of what we can see.

Wait a minute, says the Lord, think a moment

I have made different types of fruitfulness, and different ways of growing

Branches may not grow high, but roots may reach deep

Holding onto the earth, holding soil firmly, giving stability

Goodness may be found closer to the ground

Growing near, or under, the fertile soil

Roots network and connect, one to another

Until a whole forest unites

In earthbound communication

Unseen, but more powerful

Than the brightest blossom.

When the roots grow deep

The tree is tough

And hard to destroy.
