In early summer, the wood is filled
With leafy green and yellow flowers
My feet disappear in the lush grass
Sun shines dappled through the canopy
And drops light piecemeal onto the forest floor
I met them there in a fairy ring
The wee folk, the fae
The leader doffed his cap to me
One leapt up on a fallen log
And danced a merry dance
A few stayed hidden in the undergrowth
But I heard bells, and tinkly laughter
They were friendly enough
They wondered why I was there
But accepted that I wanted to be away
Separate from human things
If just for a while
We talked of many wonderful things
But the day grew long
And I had to go
They waved farewell
And said they would be pleased
To see me any time
I think I shall go back again
To see such beauty
To speak of magic
Is more than the mundane world will ever offer.
